How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac
Short answer: open the HEIC in Preview, choose File → Export, set the format to JPEG, save. Every Mac made in the last decade can do this with tools that are already installed — no app, no upload, no cost.
Macs are the one platform where HEIC is a non-problem: macOS has decoded the format natively since High Sierra, so every route below works offline. The reason people still search for it is the second half of the job — the converted file has to go somewhere that doesnot speak HEIC: a Windows colleague, a school portal, a web form, a photo lab.
Way 1: Preview (the standard route)
Double-click the .heic — it opens in Preview. File → Export, click theFormat dropdown, choose JPEG, set the quality slider (High is the default sweet spot), pick a destination, press Save. Apple documents this exact flow inConvert image file types using Preview. Hold Option in the File menu to turn Export into “Export as…” for a batch of selected photos.
Way 2: Finder quick action (fastest for folders)
Select a folder’s worth of photos in Finder, right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image. Choose JPEG, pick Original/Small/Medium/Large size, press Convert. The JPGs appear next to the originals. This is the closest thing macOS has to a bulk HEIC to JPG converter, and it is already on your machine.
Way 3: Photos app export
If the photo already lives in your Photos library: select it, File → Export → Export N Photos, choose JPEG and the quality/size options. Useful when the originals came from an iPhone sync rather than sitting loose in a folder.
Way 4: Browser converter (when it is not your Mac)
Borrowed laptop, office machine with managed permissions, or a photo too large for your local setup? Drag it into the converter below — it runs in the tab, installs nothing, and uploads nothing. JPG is the default output; switch to PNG or PDF with the buttons at the top.
